  We love you too, Earth!

Valentine’s Day has always been associated with the perfect time to express love and gratitude. A celebration that started in honor of Saint Valentine who lost his life but refused to deny the right of people to love each other has gradually grown into a worldwide phenomenon in the modern world.

Different countries have different traditions regarding this day but all of them are united by the habit of expressing love with flowers, chocolate, and gifts. In this post, we want to point your attention towards someone you must not forget to honor as well – our planet.

If you love her, show her – here are six ideas of what you can do instead of the clichés and convey appreciation towards both your loved ones and our home in a sustainable way.

Potted Plants > Cut-off Flowers

Cut-off flowers might be a nice gesture but are not the most sensible decision. The industry has serious negative effects on the environment only for the sake of a few days of joy and a “refreshing atmosphere”. Something that can last longer and have a much stronger effect if you replace it with a potted plant.

Potted plants last way longer, give more satisfaction (because you have to take care of them), and are free of dangerous chemicals. Cut-off flowers are typically produced in a short-cycle process requiring extensive agrochemical use so they can grow fast and big (info). This has a negative effect on air, soil, and water supply (also a lot of energy is required to mass produce them).

Replace the cut-off with a potted flower and express your affection towards both your loved ones and your home – planet Earth. Something even better? You can create a new plant from your existing aloe or geranium.

Make her comfortable

What better way to show someone your love than to ensure comfort with a clean environment. Yes, pollution is a huge issue and this is exactly why we need to constantly work on it. Show mother Earth you care about her by cleaning up a littered area – a roadside, local park, beach, or your favorite picnic spot.

This will also help you enjoy nature’s company and appreciate her beauty even more. You can take your significant other for a romantic walk or picnic in the area where you can enjoy the fruit of your efforts together (or even better – invite him/her to join the clean-up).

Spend your money wisely

People typically spend the most money on cut-off flowers, chocolates, and jewelry during the lovely holiday.

What if you spend the same amount you set aside for those gifts to donate to an organization planting trees or ensuring preservation of natural habitats of rare species? Nature will show your gratitude by providing the air you breathe every day and giving you a breathtaking scenery to enjoy.

Your loved ones will most certainly appreciate your company more than anything. You can also throw in a nice home-cooked meal or exciting outdoor “adventure” instead of a material gift to make them remember the day the right way.

Take care of the family

Expressing your love by showing you care. Plant a tree and look after it to ensure it grows strong. Trees need a lot of care and love at the start of their development and they reward us for our affection with oxygen, fruits, and their undisputed beauty.

You can show planet Earth you love her by taking care of an important part of her huge family. A worthy activity that will leave you feeling satisfied and happy.

Help the future

Design and write a handwritten letter to your mayor asking for the implementation of eco-friendly solutions and sustainable development in your local community. It is not a secret we have entered an age where sustainability and thinking about long-term effects can have a decisive role for our future.

The more we raise awareness and persist the bigger our chances for positive improvement are. And what better way to start than on a local level?

You can ask your friends and family to sign the letter and get them involved in your action to highlight the importance and support of the idea.

Appreciation shows love

Showing genuine appreciation cannot be a bad choice when you want to express your love.

Take a long walk in a park, on the beach, or around the forest just by yourself and try to take in all the charm and grace of nature. Pay attention to the birds and animals, appreciate the breezes of the wind and the warmth of the sun (or the grace of the rain) and remind yourself that you and Mother Earth are inevitably intertwined. We depend on each other and we cannot allow ourselves to forget that.

Leave your phone at home so there are no distractions and you can fully devote to the on-the-spot experience.

Showing our love for Mother Earth is just as important as it is showing it to our loved ones. We all depend on nature for our well-being and it is our moral duty to give her the attention and care she deserves in return.

Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to express our love but we should not limit ourselves to doing it only once a year. Each day is the perfect time to do something nice for the people and the planet we love.
